Instagram, the popular iOS photo app, announced it has surpassed 27 million registered users today at the South by Southwest (SXSW) Interactive conference in Austin, Texas. Apple had proclaimed it the App of the Year for 2011.
The company is also getting ready to release an android version of the app, the app’s founders Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger said at a SXSW conference presentation. “In some ways, it’s better than our iOS app. It’s crazy,” Systrom said. In a conversation with TechCrunch, the pair revealed that the Android app is almost ready. “In some ways, it’s better than our iOS app,”Systrom told the crowd.
Instagram has so far only been available for the iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch. However, it was only a matter of time until its arrival on the Android platform considering that platform is the market leader right now. Together, Apple and Android make up almost 90 percent of the smartphone market.
