Game of Thrones Crowned Most Pirated TV Show

Well its official. HBO’s incredibly successful TV show, Game of Thrones, has become the most pirated TV show of the season leaving other popular shows such as How I Met Your Mother and the Big Bang Theory in the dust. While Game of Thrones is a enthralling show, the reason that so many people have downloaded it illegally is likely to be a combination of the show’s greatness coupled with the fact that HBO has made it almost impossible to access online. As if that weren’t enough, the show experienced major airing delays oversees. All these factors combined to make pirating history.

Game of Thrones has seen particular popularity in Australia. Having to wait a full week after the U.S. release though, it’s no wonder that the Aussies pirated the show. But even here in the States, thousands of fans torrented the episodes. The crux of the issue is that HBO’s online service, HBO GO, is only accessible to customers who opt into their cable service as well. So what you’re left with is an adoring fan base who can’t easily access Game of Thrones. The only way for these people to get their fix is to visit BitTorrent or ThePirateBay, even though many wouldn’t mind to pay for the show.

It seems that HBO is stuck in the past, holding an all or none attitude when it comes to their services. The problem is that it is all or none… for HBO, not the TV show’s fans.  With pirating as easy as it is, HBO needs to revamp its business model so as not to lose more potential customers to the ease of pirating. Hopefully the executives at HBO realize their error and make the third season of Game of Thrones easier to access. But for now, Game of Thrones is head-to-head with Dexter to become the most pirated TV show of 2012.
