In perhaps foreshadowing what is to come at E3, Sony revealed, through its official website today, that there will be a PSN Premium service. In responding to user questions, Andrew House, president of Sony Computer Entertainment Europe, stated “I can assure you that the current PSN as you know it will remain a free
service. It is something that our competitors don’t offer and something
that shows our loyalty to the PlayStation Community. However, Kaz Hirai
stated a few months ago that we were looking at a premium service to sit
alongside the current free service and that objective has not changed.
You’ll learn more about it very soon.”
No other details were revealed as part of the interview, and House did not address any other questions regarding the future of PSN premium. However, from the quote, it appears that there will be a division similar to the current Xbox Live Silver/Gold package, although the features of each are obviously yet to be spelled out. We’ll keep you posted as it appears details will likely be forthcoming very shortly.
