The latest installment of game developer Infinity Ward’s Call of Duty franchise — Modern Warfare 3, has smashed all previous records to become the highest grossing entertainment launch ever! That’s right, it’s bigger than Harry Potter, Batman, Spiderman, etc. According to the game’s publisher Activision Blizzard, “Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3” grossed over $400 million in North America and the United Kingdom in the first day of its release by selling more than 6.5 million copies. The publisher is also reporting that 13,000 retail stores worldwide opened at midnight on Monday to allow gamers to buy their favorite title. Activision Blizzard chief executive Bobby Kotick said, “We believe the launch of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 is the biggest entertainment launch of all time in any medium, and we achieved this record with sales from only two territories.”
Compare that to Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2, which made $80m in one day from the “global” box office – a record figure for the film industry. Modern Warfare 3 has also set a record for the largest numbers of concurrent players on Xbox Live.
