Drosophila melanogaster to change names

Patrick Nosker April 10, 2010 0

According to Nature, the genus Drosophila may lose its name. The London based International Commission on Zoological Nomenclature voted to reject a petition to keep the Drosophila family together which has been gaining interest for over two years.

A large uprising of biologists have been upset by this potential change due to the fact the Drosophila family is one of the most studied of the model organisms. The expected future name of the common fruit fly will be Sophophora melanogaster, joining over 1,100 other species currently in the Drosophila family. It’s expected that many researchers will continue to use the name Drosophila due to its popular nature.
