Remember, back in 2009, when Borders effectively leaked the iPad with a survey that asked customers if they intended to buy Apple’s then-unannounced “large screen reading device?” Well, it seems Apple’s next big product has been given the same head start, this time through Best Buy.
A survey from the big retailer describes a 42″ Apple HDTV, available for $1499. Details include a 42″ 1080p LED display, the fact that it runs iOS and supports the App Store, iTunes, and iCloud, as well as the ability to use an iPhone or iPad as a remote control for the device. An iSight camera and microphone make video calls possible.
All of these specs line up pretty nicely with the rumors we’ve been hearing for a few months now (despite being largely overshadowed by rumors of an iPad 3). According to Tom’s Guide, however, the survey “was run by a research partner and that references to the Apple TV or possible specs of said TV were hypothetical.” But the last time someone accidentally leaked a product survey early, we got the iPad. And given Apple’s history of relatively high-profile leaks–the words “iPhone,” “4,” and “bar” come to mind–we wouldn’t be surprised if the iTV actually materializes within a year or so.
We leave you to draw your own conclusions, though–maybe Apple wouldn’t play the same gag twice, or maybe leak is an elaborate hoax perpetrated by a Best Buy/Cupertino double agent. Maybe you think we should take this leak at face value, or maybe you’re disappointed and were expecting more from Apple. Let us know in the comments!
