BTJunkie Shuts Down Voluntarily

BTJunkie Shuts Down Voluntarily

BTJunkie, a popular BitTorrent search engine, has voluntarily shut down after seven years in existence.  The recent seizures of MegaUpload and several hundred sports broadcasting websites likely had an significant impact over the move to voluntarily shut down.  It’s yet to be seen if BTJunkie will go completely inactive or whether they will follow in the footsteps of The Pirate Bay, which ended its search service in 2009 but still allows for the trading of content through decentralized methods such as magnet link sharing.

All that is left of BTJunkie is a four-sentence statement, which reads:

“This is the end of the line my friends. The decision does not come easy, but we’ve decided to voluntarily shut down. We’ve been fighting for years for your right to communicate, but it’s time to move on. It’s been an experience of a lifetime, we wish you all the best!”

According to the website ranking service Alexa, as of February 2012 BTJunkie ranked as the 392nd most popular website in the world.  For comparison, The Pirate Bay reached as high as 75.

As more news comes out we will be sure to bring it to you!

Made me sad when I saw the notice. :'( Been using that site for years and always found great torrents on there, better than The Pirate Bay.

They say they’ve shut down voluntarily. This is so out of the blue. Kind of suspicious! – I think they are scared what with SOPA, PIPA, ACTA, and the shutdown of Megaupload recently. It seems the internet is being clamped down on these last few months. We already had DMCA, but now it’s getting very scary… and this is BEFORE any of these terrible acts have passed.

Btjunkie was the only trusted torrent site out there.

I guess the people involved in running the site didnt want to get 50 years in jail.

I thought we beat SOPA but with btjunkie and qss both closing “voluntarily” shutting down, it’s clear the douchebag bad guys have won. Come on, y’all. Time for the pirate community to nut up and grow a pair.

Another great resource of information has now been removed by our wonderful government. What I want to know is when sites like YouTube are going to get theirs … talk about copyright infringement that place is full of it.

‘We’ve been fighting for years for your right to communicate, but it’s time to move on.’ Classic. I don’t think they intended to say as much with that sentence as they ended up saying. The mob that is the U.S. government has scared the piss out of us and made us fear for our lives and freedom. And we are not Thomas Mores or Patrick Henrys; we are simple people who don’t want to lose everything we own and spend the rest of our existence in jail, so we will surrender what we believe is right to those in power.

Not a troll, but have any of you considered the fact that maybe the Internet never should have been as “free” as it is and that while it (re: stealing music and movies, bullying people until they killed themselves, posting craigslist ads fishing for nudes of teenagers, selling fake merchandise to unsuspecting honest people, etc.) was nice while it lasted, perhaps it’s time that there is some law in place?

This is not the wild west, we are not primitive beings. Law and regulation has been an integral and necessary part of our society throughout recorded history. It doesn’t seem like anyone is looking to harm us, just to put a leash on something that has clearly gotten out of control.

I don’t understand why so many people feel like they can run around and do whatever they want with no consequences and that this is how the world SHOULD be. Maybe we should strip the non-Internet world of laws, too?

I, for one, would rather see the legitimate business protected (even if they ARE the “evil” giants such as the entertainment industry) than ones capitalizing off of the destruction of legitimate businesses.

We are all pawns in a war between multi-million and billion dollar businesses. None of these people care about our rights our freedoms, they care about keeping the cash in their pockets. Stop acting like these sites are the saviors of the Internet. They don’t give a shit about you or the Internet. They care about themselves ONLY, which is WHY btjunkie shut down – because these people have families, lives, made some decent money etc. and know when to call it quits. Do you think if they cared so much about YOU or GENUINELY believed what they were doing was ok that they would stop?

The public uproar over Internet regulation is proof positive that the majority of humans are easily manipulated morons. I hope this world self destructs.

Also, here’s a fact: The U.S. government controls the Internet. Therefore, they have every right to be hunting down all these morons abusing it in a way that the U.S. deems unreasonable. I’m sure every one of you has some property or at the very least a secret that you would like to be able to control without half the world using it however they want. Since when is it news that THAT’S ok?

    /facepalm

You ever consider having to deal with other peoples liberties and how they may abuse them is the true price of your own liberty. No you come on here with the same slup we could have gotten from the 6 oclock spoon feed.

I hate everything the KKK stands for but if the Government tried to take away their right to their free speech I would be there to bust heads just the same. A revolution is brewing and much of what is going on is not about copyright its about control of information. They don’t want us to be able to communicate which means you wouldn’t have the right to make a public comment even agreeing with them.

I have been living outside the U.K. since 1985.Sites like BT and UK Nova have always proved very efficient in keeping up to date with 3 seasons old before they hit the screens here.
    They will be missed!
